Teen years are filled with growth, change, and, sometimes, overwhelming stress. Whether it's school pressure, social expectations, the political climate of this country, or personal challenges, stress can take a toll on mental health. For Black girls, stress can also be heightened by cultural and societal pressures, making it even more important to equip them with healthy coping strategies. Many Black girls desire to have safe spaces cultivated for them to feel seen and heard.

Here are a few ways you can help a teen manage stress:
Listen Without Judgment – Let them share their feelings openly. Sometimes, being heard can be incredibly healing.
Encourage Mindfulness and Relaxation – Practices like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga can help calm the mind and body. These techniques promote self-awareness and emotional regulation.
Promote Physical Activity – Regular exercise can reduce stress hormones and boost mood. Whether it’s dancing to their favorite playlist, walking, or team sports, staying active is vital for mental health.
Affirm Their Strengths and Identity – Help them connect with their cultural roots and unique qualities. Celebrating who they are can boost self-esteem and resilience. Get your teen involved in local cultural events and organizations with other girls with shared interests and values.
Prioritize Rest and Self-Care – Encourage healthy sleep habits, balanced nutrition, and moments of downtime. Self-care is not selfish; it’s essential.
By offering love, support, and empowering tools, Black girls can build resilience and thrive despite stress.
